Fact
Sheet: The Global HIV/AIDS Epidemic
The HIV/AIDS epidemic has already claimed over 25 million lives
and more than 39 million people are currently estimated to be living
with HIV/AIDS worldwide. HIV/AIDS cases have been reported in all
regions of the world. This fact sheet looks at the global response
to the epidemic and its economic impact, as well as provides the
latest data on the impact of the epidemic by geographic region,
on women and on young people.
Fact
Sheet: The HIV/AIDS Epidemic in the Caribbean
The HIV/AIDS epidemic has had a profound impact on the Caribbean
region, the second-most affected region in the world, after Sub-Saharan
Africa, and the most affected in the Americas. AIDS is a leading
cause of death among 15-44 year-olds in the region. The epidemic
varies significantly across the region's countries and by population,
reflecting the Caribbean's cultural, ethnic, and geographic diversity.
Women are increasingly affected, comprising half of those living
with HIV/AIDS. Young people- especially young women-are at particular
risk. This fact sheet provides an overview of the HIV/AIDS epidemic
in the Caribbean, including the latest data on the populations affected
and information on international support for initiatives to fight
the epidemic in the region.
UNAIDS
Report on the Global AIDS Epidemic 2006
The latest report from UNAIDS reports a decline in HIV prevalence
over the past few years in some countries in the Caribbean region.
However, the Caribbean continues to be the second-most affected
region globally. These latest findings were published in AIDS Epidemic
Update 2006, the annual report by the Joint United Nations Programme
on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) and the World Health Organization (WHO).
