Sydney really does put on a good show at Christmas time. Come December the weather is beautifully warm making Christmas day generally a great beach day. Rather then sitting down for a big heavy roast the locals here pack a picnic and head off to the beach for some sunshine, surf and BBQ. Bondi is an extremely popular spot at Christmas time for the locals and one to definitely check out. Expect to see lots of Santa hats on the sandy shores. You also can’t beat the Sydney Harbor fireworks at New Years. Be sure to turn up early for a good harbor spot to view the fireworks. Crowds start gathering around the harbor very early in the day.
If you are a big time surfer then you can’t go past heading off to the Gold Coast for a Christmas time surf. You are spoilt for choice here on good surfing spots with also Byron Bay and the Sunshine Coast very close by. This part of Australia is a lot more relaxed to the other major cities like Sydney and Melbourne, so it’s a great Christmas holiday spot for a chilled out vibe.
If you want to give your taste buds a real treat then you definitely need to head on over to Melbourne. Melbourne has a great trendy vibe and is home to some of the best restaurants and cafes in Australia. Fitzory and St Kilda are the best spots to head too for good food. Melbourne also offers some amazing shopping, so just prepare your credit card for some serious splurging.
Nothing quite beats a good bottle of wine over the Christmas break, so why not head on over to the wine country of Australia. You are spoilt for choice as just outside of Adelaide is the famous Barossa Valley, Mclaren Vale and Adelaide Hills wine regions. These are all home to some of Australia’s best and award winning wineries. Book in a wine tour so you can sample you don’t need to worry about driving.
Whatever you get up to this holiday season, I hope you have a wonderful and joyous time. Remember to hug your loved ones, eat lots of scrumptious food and be merry.
