Renovation Wreckage: What Can Go Wrong

The idea of renovation is so attractive that it’s tempting to just fly right on into it with little thought. After all, there’s something you want to change about your home, fixes that are needed, alterations that can breathe a new lease of life into your abode. When you’ve made the decision to go for it, it can be tempting to just fly on in with little further thought.

While you’re so focused on the good things, it’s far too easy to forget the ways in which any project you undertake can go wrong. So before you pick up the hammer, pull down your welding visor, or start knocking down walls, do try and remember to avoid these common problems.

#1 – Ignoring Measurements

It shouldn’t happen, but it does. Rather than carefully measuring a space to ensure you have the room for whatever you’re planning, you just think “that sounds about right” and push forward. Then you’re stuck with furniture that doesn’t fit or a new layout for a room that doesn’t allow you to open the door fully. Always take the time to measure and ensure everything is going to work as you anticipate.

#2 – Lack Of Expertise

If you get a quote from a professional to do the work, it’s probably going to be more than you imagine. Well, you think, that’s no problem – you’ll just DIY it! Surely it can’t be that difficult to catch up on the latest innovations, the techniques to make things go smoothly, drill down into technical queries and comparing reviews on, even toying with the idea of expanding a space – it’s all possible. However, it does take a lot longer to DIY a job that someone else does as a profession, so be cautious of budgeting the right amount of time for each task.

#3 – Improper Budgeting

Talking of budgeting: if you go into a renovation without a firm idea of what you’re going to be spending in which areas, then disaster beckons. So make sure you’re on top of your budget; if you’re not sure where to begin, then has some excellent ideas.

#4 – Forgetting The Legal Side

While the house is yours, this does not necessarily mean you can do whatever you want with it. There might be restrictions if your home is listed, and you will have to take into account anything that might impact your neighbors. For example, if you’re planning an extension that is going to ruin their view from a window. So always make sure you have the proper permissions and agreements before you begin any project.

#5 – Forgetting It’s A Home

Don’t forget that during the renovation, you’re still going to have to live there. That means you need a schedule that takes this into account, especially if you’re dealing with high-use areas like the kitchen or bathroom. A renovation is one thing, but if it’s going to compromise your ability to live your life, then you have to make sure you get the timing spot on.
