1) Ensure it’s What You Really Want

I made the mistake of buying a car I thought I should buy and it wasn’t the car I really wanted. A few months after the purchase, I really regretted it but financially I was not in a position to change it. As such, I suggest you find a balance between what seems to be a good option and what you really want so that you will be happy with your purchase for the future.

2) Consider your Long Term Needs

If you’re planning to have a family, then something like a Land Rover is a great option because it will last you year after year. If you’re wanting to expand your family in a year or two, don’t get a tiny car that wont fit all your children.

3) Choose a Budget

It can be really easy to get emotional with spending, especially when it’s something like a car. Cars can be thought of a status symbol, something that needs to be safe enough to protect your family in the worst case situation and something that needs to be affordable both in terms of petrol and outright cost. As such, choose a budget and stick to it. It can be tempting to bend your budget to get something fancier, but be realistic so you don’t regret your purchase, or, worse, find yourself in financial trouble.

4) Negotiate

Prices tend to be quite flexible with cars. Ask if the dealership offers trade-ins for your old car. Ask about financing options. Compare different cars in different locations. See what the best price is. Be prepared to walk away, to think about it, to compare, compare, compare until you find something that feels like a great deal.
